A free PDF to Word converter can save you hours of time and endless hassle. PDFs aren't designed for editing in mind, so if you need change or extract text or images, the easiest way is to convert it to a Word document, which you can then open with the office software of your choice.
There are several free PDF to Word converters that can do the job, using different techniques to identify and extract images and text, while preserving the original formatting. They're not all the same though, and some application gives much more accurate results than others.
We've put the best PDF to Word converters through their paces to decide which recreates the original document most faithfully. You can see the results of our tests on the left, and click the previews to zoom in.
1. WPS PDF to Word Converter
An accurate and impressive free PDF to Word converter
Today's best WPS PDF to Word Converter deals
WPS PDF to Word Converter is a brand new tool from the developer behind one of our favorite free office suites, WPS Office. It’s incredibly easy to use – just drag the file onto the software’s main screen and pick the export format (options include DOC, DOCX, and RTF) and click ‘Start’.
Because it’s a desktop app, WPS PDF to Word Converter is noticeably faster than online tools, and can process files in batches. The free edition will convert PDFs up to five pages long, so if you want to convert larger documents you’ll need to divide it into chunks first using a tool like PDFSAM Basic. Alternatively, the premium version of WPS PDF to Word Converter costs $29.95/£22.95/AU$39.95, with no limit on pagination.
The exported Word documents are very impressive – easily the best of all the PDF to Word converters we tested. Images were preserved and aligned correctly, text formatting was retained, and font styles and weights were accurately reproduced. WPS PDF to Word Converter is the best free PDF to Word converter.
2. Wondershare PDFElement
A full PDF conversion suite in one neatly designed package
To get the free version of Wondershare PDFElement, select 'Downloads' from the menu at the top of the page and select the version for either WIndows or Mac, depending on your operating system.
You can only convert five documents at a time using this free PDF to Word converter, and you’re warned that your converted documents will be watermarked, but the watermark is only an image placed over the top of the other page elements and can be easily removed by clicking it and hitting 'Delete'.
The page layout remained consistent with the original, and although some text boxes and images needed a little repositioning, all the content was converted successfully. We had mixed luck with documents containing non-standard fonts, but those are easily changed in any word processing software.
If you use Wondershare PDFElement frequently, the premium subscription is quite affordable, and will eliminate the need to split larger PDFs into five-page chunks before converting them.
3. Free Online OCR
OCR produces documents that look perfect with a little tweaking
As the name suggests, Free Online OCR is a free PDF to Word converter uses optical character recognition to identify text in PDFs. This means it works with scanned documents as well as original files – essential if you want to convert and edit a printed handout from a lecture, for example.
Free Online OCR can only convert one file at a time, up to 5GB in size. Select your PDF, pick a language, choose a format (Microsoft Word, Excel, or plain text), and then enter a Captcha to start the conversion.
After a few seconds you’re provided with a link to download the converted file. Unlike some web apps, there’s no need to provide an email address, then wait for the link to be delivered.
In our tests, Free Online OCR did a great job of preserving our PDF’s formatting, presenting text in editable columns. We were particularly impressed that the image was formatted as a header and locked in place.
The limitations of OCR were visible in a few places – text on colored backgrounds wasn’t always identified, and there were a few rogue tabs and line breaks – but it wouldn’t take much tweaking to get the Word document looking almost identical to the PDF. Free Online OCR is a very impressive free PDF to Word converter – we just wish it was available as a desktop app so we didn’t have to upload files one at a time.
4. Nitro PDF to Word Converter
Great for text, but not a good choice for image-heavy documents
There are two versions of Nitro PDF to Word Converter – a desktop app for Windows and an online version – but only the latter is free to use forever.
You can upload multiple files, and there’s a good choice of import and export formats (including Word, PowerPoint and Excel), but there are some significant drawbacks. Unlike Free Online OCR, Nitro PDF to Word Converter emails your converted file to you, and each email address is limited to five file conversions per month – a pretty severe limit that severely restricts its usefulness.
Text was maintained quite well in our converted document – including the keylines between columns, which was a pleasant surprise – but the main image didn’t survive the change of format. There were also some rogue spaces and line breaks when we used this free PDF to Word converter, though these wouldn’t take long to correct manually.
5. UniPDF
Works well with simple documents, but struggles with formatting
UniPDF is a desktop app, which means it avoids the issues of slow upload and download speeds associated with online tools, and means you don’t have to trust your documents to a third party that might keep them cached.
The trial edition of this free PDF to Word converter can only convert three pages – to convert more you’ll need to either upgrade to the paid version, or split your PDF using a tool like PDFsam, then recombine the resulting Word documents.
In our tests, UniPDF preserved the overall look of our magazine page, including images, but struggled with complex text formatting. Columns ran into one another, and in some cases the converted text was a dramatically different size to the original, making it tricky to adjust. A few letters were also missing here and there, leaving us with quite an extensive cleanup job to get the Word document to a functional state.

Best free PDF editors
Read out reviews below for more information.
There are some fantastic free PDF editors around, so we've rounded up the very best to make your life easier.
PDF documents are designed to look and behave exactly the same way on any device. That makes it a brilliant format for sharing, but editing them is another matter. Most office software and photo editors let you export documents in PDF format, but editing requires a dedicated tool. That's because PDF was initially a proprietary format owned by Adobe, and it still owns some of the technologies associated with it. Other companies can license those technologies, but only for a fee that's usually passed on to you – the user.
There aren’t many free PDF editors, and even fewer that won’t leave your documents with unsightly watermarks. That's why we've hand-picked the very best free PDF editors, which offer all the tools you need and won't spoil your work with unsightly watermarks.
1. SmallPDF
SmallPDF is a cloud-based PDF editor, which means it can be used through any device using an internet browser.
It uses a simplified interface to make it easy to edit or add text, as well as drawings or images. Using drag and drop, you can add or remove content as required.
It also comes with a PDF to Word editor, which means if you need to make more detailed edits in a Word doc you can, and even better is that formatting should be preserved.
Uploads and edits are made securely via SSL, so you don't need to worry about third-parties accessing your PDF documents, which could be a concern if the information in them is confidential.
You can also use SmallPDF to fill in forms, esign, unlock, or protect a PDF. Files can be imported directly from online storage providers such as Google Drive and Drop Box.
Overall, SmallPDF is a compact but powerful PDF editor, that should be able to help you achieve most initial edits required, with the helpful doc conversion for more complicated edits.
While it's not free to use continuously, there is a 14-day free trial, which can be useful if you only need to get a few documents edited. After that, pricing begins from around $5 per month.

2. PDF-XChange Editor
Another superb tool for editing text in PDFs, with built-in OCR
If you need to edit the text in a PDF, PDF-XChange Editor is ideal. It lets you retype, delete, and reformat text, and adapts well if the document uses a font that isn’t installed on your PC. You can also attach comments, split PDFs, and extract pages.
One of PDF-Xchange Editor’s best features is the ability to use OCR to recognize text in scanned documents – ideal if you only have a printout rather than the original file (a handout from a lecture, for example).
Some of the features visible in the menus and toolbars are only available in the premium version of the software, PDF-XChange Editor Plus, but you can easily hover your mouse pointer over an icon to find out if it’s included.
If you go ahead and use a premium tool anyway (adding polygonal shapes or new text boxes, for example), your document will be watermarked. Look out for a warning message underneath the main toolbar before saving your work, just in case.
Pdf Converter Free Download
The paid-for downloads, PDF-XChange Editor costs $43.50 (£35) for the normal version, but for additional features such as form creation and use you will need to buy PDF-XChange Editor Plus, which costs $54.50 ($48).
3. Sejda
An online-only free PDF editor with a great choice of tools
Free online PDF editor Sejda offers an excellent range of tools, with an added layer of security: all files are deleted from its servers after five hours.
You can add text, images and links, sign documents, add annotations, and insert ellipses and rectangles. There’s also a ‘whiteout’ option, though this simply draws a white rectangle – it doesn’t remove any data. There’s no OCR either, so you won’t be able to edit text in scanned PDFs.
When you’ve finished editing, click ‘Apply changes’ and you’ll be able to download the document, send it to Dropbox or Google Drive, delete it, or access a shareable link. The link will expire after seven days.
There are limits on the free service: every hour, you can process no more than 200 pages or 50MB data (whichever comes first) and perform no more than three tasks. That’s pretty generous, but if you need to perform more tasks, there are weekly, monthly and annual passes available.
At $5 (about £4, AU$7), a weekly pass would work out quite expensive over a long period, but is perfect if you’ll only be needing the full tool for a short time and don’t want to commit to a longer subscription.
4. PDFescape
A free online PDF editor that lets you add new text and images
There are two versions of the PDFescape PDF editor: a free web app and a premium desktop program. Here we're using the online editor; if you download the desktop software, you'll only receive a trial of the premium edition. It's suitable for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari, and will probably work fine on other Chromium-based browsers too.
PDFescape's online editor lets you create new text boxes on the page, but unless you upgrade to the full desktop software there's no way to edit existing text either, you you can create simple geometric shapes and – as with Sedja, above – add white rectangles to obscure parts of the document when it's printed.
PDFescape lets you select a picture from your PC, then drag a rectangle to insert it. You can insert text fields too, enabling you to create simple forms – a rare and welcome feature for a free PDF editor.

5. Ableword
A word processor that's also a capable free PDF editor
Jpg To Pdf Converter
Anatomia Y Fisiologia Pdf
AbleWord hasn’t been updated since 2015, but it still gets the job done. This free software is primarily a word processor (as the name implies), but it also works well as a handy free PDF editor. Don’t be put off by its MS Word-style looks – just hit File > Open, select your PDF, and be amazed by its editing abilities.
Clicking a text box will cause it to turn white, but this only happens while you’re actively editing it; when deselected, it will return to its former color. Your PDF might not look exactly like it did originally, but in our experience any differences are very minor, and mostly relate to the different fonts available on different computers.
It’s a very impressive free PDF editor, but we haven't ranked it more highly due to its lack of recent updates, which could leave it open to security vulnerabilities. However unlikely, it's a possibility.
