How To Install Heat Shield On Mossberg 590 A1
With direct input from the US military, Mossberg took another look at the 590 model. First and foremost, the thickness of the 590’s barrel was examined. Due to extensive deployment on ships where the risk of denting standard-thickness barrels on bulkheads or steel decking was a real concern, the barrel wall thickness was beefed up to address this potential problem. Except that is the 20' model that comes with a heat shield. That is another option I would like to add if it fits the thicker A1 barrel without a ton of modification.

How to Install a Mossberg Heat Shield Step 1. Place the shotgun barrel up with the action open. Use a small adjustable wrench to unscrew the brass front sight. Position the screw guides between the interior of the forward mounting bracket. Put the brass front sight back. The heat shield is much sketchier and I dont endorse what I did. The stock mossberg 500/590 heatshield fits exactly to the end of the barrel but there are issues you need to overcome:-The shockwave has the oversized/thick walled barrel that the heat shield isnt designed for. It wont fit over the front without significant force. Messages: 1,627. Posting this here in hopes actual gunsmiths will read this as opposed to doubting thomases in the shotgun section will read this. So for starters, Mossberg says you can't install a heat shield on a 590a1, let alone one with the 3-dot sights. Another guy on Shotgun World made a thread stating you can. Hi folks,
Recently picked up a 590A1 9 shot with ghost ring sights. I love this gun so far, the sights are great, and it's extremely fun to shoot.
However, it does get a bit hot.
I would love to install a heat shield, and from doing some searching, I found this helpful post:
However, it mentions that this won't fit on a gun with the ghost ring sights. Why not?
Here's a picture of the gun with the ghost ring sights:

The rear sights are a good two inches away from where the barrel connects to the receiver..nowhere close to where the rear part of the heat shield attaches. The front sights are also a good three inches from where the heat shield spacer attaches.
The sights are also elevated enough that the heat shield would never come close to obscuring the sights.

So why can't I use the heat shield with the ghost ring sights? I'm not sure I understand.
And if it turns out it won't fit, is there a heat shield that will?
Thanks!
I'm tired of seeing 590A1 fans online trying to rig a 590 heat shield onto their 590A1s and/or complaining. Here's the deal: the 590A1 has a thicker barrel, so the 590 heat shield won't fit over it. Alternatives from other companies are scarce and expensive at best - with some people paying $80+ to even $300 on a gunbroker auction. Nonsense!
BECAUSE: Mossberg's been making a 590A1-specific heat shield for awhile now, and it fits over the barrel just fine. [as long as your 590A1 is the beaded sight and not ghost rings -- you have to unscrew the bead to install] It's in their law enforcement catalog. Call them @ (800) 363-3555 and order part number 16335P. And yes, it is Parkerized and matches the shotgun perfectly.
The shape is placed on the drawing page, and a connector is added and glued to both shapes. • Release the mouse button. Inkscape uml template for powerpoint.
As of January of this year, it was 10-14 days to your door for $38 +$7 shipping and handling. A steal.
You'll get the heat shield, screws, and a spacer. You'll need a little saw blade (leatherman works) to cut the spacer to size. The spacer needs to butt up to the back of the bracket that attaches the bayonet lug to the barrel. Measure twice, cut once. The spacer is some kind of heat-resistant plastic, and it easy to cut and file down.

Final word: this isn't a tacticool, looks-only mod. Even with the thick barrel, running a couple boxes of game loads through this bad boy will get your barrel hot. I prefer a heat shield to gloves.

Edit: Forgot to add, I think the heat shield may only fit the 20' barrel 590A1s - not the 18.5' barrel version.
