There are two ways of erasing portions of shapes in Adobe Illustrator. First, you can manipulate the anchor points in the shape to delete large or small portions from the edges and corners. Secondly, you can use the Eraser Tool to erase parts of a shape much the same way you would use a pencil eraser on paper. The Eraser Tool also creates a new path on the shape, which you can manipulate using its anchor points. Of course, to delete an entire shape, simply select it and press 'Delete.'

This tutorial will show you how to create an outline in Adobe Illustrator. Use the Pen Tool or Pencil Tool to draw a line. To create an outline from text, use the Type Tool to create your text. Manipulating Anchor Points

Launch Adobe Illustrator and press 'Ctrl' plus 'N' to create a new document. Click 'OK.' Double-click the Foreground Color swatch in the toolbox. Select any color except white from the color picker and click 'OK.'

Select the 'Rectangle Tool' from the toolbox. Drag the tool across the canvas to create a shape. Note that the rectangle is surrounded by a blue line, with an anchor point on each corner.

Click and hold down the mouse on the 'Pen Tool' in the Toolbox. Select the 'Add Anchor Point Tool' from the drop-down menu.

Hover the tool above the top edge of the rectangle until you see the word 'Path' above the cursor. Click the mouse to add an anchor point to the line. Repeat this to add an anchor point to middle of the left edge of the rectangle.

Click and hold the Add Anchor Point Tool in the toolbox, and then select the Pen Tool or the Delete Anchor Point Tool.

Click the top right corner anchor point on the rectangle. The corner of the rectangle is erased.

Using the Eraser Tool

Double-click the Eraser Tool in the toolbox to open the Eraser Options window. If you can't see the Eraser Tool, press 'Shift + E' to make it visible in the toolbox.

Change the size of the Eraser by dragging the 'Diameter' slider, or by typing a value, such as '30' for 30 pt, in the text field.

Examine the other available options. By default, the eraser is circular. Flatten the eraser by typing any value below 100 into the Roundness field. You can then change the angle of the eraser by typing a value between minus 180 and 180 degrees in the Angle field. Click 'OK' to apply the changes.

Drag the Erase Tool across the rectangle. Note that a blue outline with circular anchor points surrounds the erased portion of the shape.

Click the Direct Selection Tool (white arrow) in the toolbox. Move the tool over an anchor point until a small square appears beside the cursor. Click and drag the tool to move the anchor point. The erased portion of the shape changes shape.

Using Eraser Tool In Illustrator

Select the Convert Anchor Point Tool in the toolbox (below the Pen Tool) to add curves in the eraser mark. Click any anchor point in the eraser mark outline and drag it. The line begins to curve and a slope line appears. Drag the tool in different directions to change the size and angle of the slope line, which changes the curve in the erased outline.

Select the Pen Tool or Delete Anchor Point Tool in the toolbox to delete an anchor point. Click on an anchor point. The anchor point vanishes and the eraser mark changes shape accordingly.

Add additional anchor points to the eraser mark outline by clicking the Add Anchor Point Tool in the toolbox. You can then manipulate these anchor points with the Direct Selection Tool or Convert Anchor Point Tool.
