- Critics said that this was one of the more convoluted episodes thus far and, man, they were not kidding. This episode throws a lot at you. As you’re watching it, it all seems to flow and make sense, but looking back, it was an odd and twisty road that this episode took. Complex plots are normally cited as a positive, but I think that they may’ve gone a bit overboard with this one.
Most episodes of this show can easily be categorized into either “mythos” or “monster of the week”. I was honestly under the impression that there was no overlap and never did the twain meet. As it turns out, they did, sort of, here. It starts off like a “monster of the week” episode with the agents investigating some kidnappings in Wisconsin that could be tied to a devout vegetarian cult of walk-ins. Speaking of which, for as much emphasis is put on this idea. The spiritual implications are never explored. Heck, the two agents are called because one of the local cops thinks that the victims had been possessed. It’s kind
of addressed later on, but not really. Maybe it’s for the best, after all, I’m still harping on those alien Amish people and that was some time ago. Then again, at least a reveal here would’ve had some foreshadowing as Mulder tries to explain the concept to Scully. Speaking of which, I’m still not sure how that whole setup works. Mulder does a better job conveying the concepts when he tries to explain it to Scully at the rib joint, but it still went over my head.As more information unfolds, we see that the events here do have direct ties to the alien experiments that will become the primary focus of the show’s ongoing storyline. Heck, the man who shot Deep Throat is identified by Scully and confronted here. While the end result wasn’t amazing, I do kind of wish they had done this more. While Scully was already awesome by virtue of being a strong, smart, snarky, and comely woman, she gets even more points here as we see that she enjoys herself some ribs at a barbecue joint. It did make for a nice breather moment between Mulder and Scully. Speaking of which, one character does misidentify her as Mulder’s wife. It was a small moment, but I found it rather amusing. It was a little shipping nod that was more underplayed than later episodes would showcase. The building tension between the townsfolk and the church group was interesting to watch and the episode did a good job of showing what looked to be an escalating conflict between these two groups of people. Sadly, it doesn’t amount to much, but it did add something to the episode in any event. I know, run time was a factor, but it seemed like everyone put aside their differences a little too easily. I did like the Sheriff. While he wasn’t fond of the Red Museum, he also sprung to their defense when his son and some other teenagers started hassling them. His character also developed a bit of pathos as you see him grieving for his son later on in the episode. While his killing of “Crew Cut Man” was a hindrance to Mulder, who wanted information, you could see why he did it and the actor did a good job of conveying the necessary emotions.This episode was a step up above the previous one. While it does end up being on the confusing end of things, I didn’t find as many faults with the script as I did the previous one. It was still an engaging watch and it did manage to progress the overall arc a significant amount. The only thing that was missing was the black haze floating over the infectees’ eyes, though to be fair, the black oil hasn’t been introduced yet, though Scully does note that “Purity Control” was definitely at play here. If you can keep up with the twisty nature of the plot, I’d recommend this episode.
